The 7-Step PPE Checklist I Use Before Approving Any Safety Gear

Every week, I review safety gear before it gets cleared for use—hearing protection, hard hats, safety glasses, the whole system. Not because vendors are careless, but because "close enough" isn't the same as "compliant."

If you buy PPE for a crew, a tactical team, or your own family, this checklist is what I actually run through. Seven steps, plus the mistakes I see most often, because avoiding those is basically half the job.

Step 1: Measure the hazard before you look at any product

People often start with brand names. I start with numbers. You can't pick a hearing protector if you don't know what you're protecting against.

Two numbers matter:

  • OSHA's action level is 85 dBA over an 8-hour shift. At that point, employers must offer hearing protection and run a hearing conservation program (29 CFR 1910.95).
  • NIOSH recommends the same 85 dBA limit but calls out impulsive noise—gunshots, impact tools—as particularly dangerous. A single muzzle blast can hit 140-170 dB.

So on a jobsite, measure first. If you're above 85 dBA consistently, hearing protection isn't optional. On a shooting range, skip the measurement. Assume every shot is too loud.

  • Require side protection. Wraparound lenses or side shields. Impacts rarely come straight at the eye.
  • Offer prescription options. Workers who need prescription glasses will leave bulky over-glasses in the truck. Prescription safety glasses solve the actual problem.

And replace scratched lenses. Deep scoring blocks visibility and weakens the lens. It shows up in audits, and the fix is cheaper than the finding.

Step 7: Don't forget the feet

Procrastinating on the timeline
