I’m an office administrator, not a safety engineer. But I buy safety equipment for a 400-person company, and since 2020, hearing protection has been one of the categories that never stops coming across my desk. I’ve processed enough orders to learn the hard way that picking “a good earmuff” isn’t a single decision.
Protection that doesn’t fit the task is just an expensive way to look prepared.
It took me about three years and a few hundred PPE orders to understand that hearing protection is a matching problem. The right choice depends on noise level, how long a person is exposed, whether they need to hear speech or radio traffic, and whether they’re also dealing with overhead hazards or fall hazards. So let’s break it down the way I wish someone had explained it to me in 2020: by scenario.
Scenario 1: Factory Floor With Steady Noise and Bluetooth Requests
If your factory has presses, compressors, or motors running near people for most of a shift, you’re in the first scenario. Here’s the tension. Bluetooth muffs include electronics. Electronics, microphones, and batteries make it harder to reach the same attenuation level as a simple passive muff with thick cups. At the high end, a passive model like the 3M Peltor X5A has an NRR of 31 dB. Many Bluetooth-equipped models have a lower NRR. That doesn’t mean they’re bad. It means you need to know which spec matters first.
According to NIOSH (cdc.gov/niosh), workers should start wearing protection when an 8-hour time-weighted average reaches 85 dBA. For every 3 dB increase, the safe exposure time drops by half. OSHA’s hearing conservation threshold in 29 CFR 1910.95 is also based on an 85 dBA time-weighted average. A “loud factory” is not a precise noise level. If you don’t have a noise survey, get one before buying a high-dollar Bluetooth headset.
I made the rookie mistake in my first year: bought a big supply of cheap foam earplugs without asking why the previous manager had chosen something different. The boxes sat there. Crews kept taking them out to hear each other. The fix wasn’t a more expensive foam plug. It was a better match—earmuffs with communication features. But the NRR still had to clear the exposure number.
If your order really does need Bluetooth and high attenuation, look for a model that doesn’t compromise the seal. Try it on, check the pressure under hard hats or bump caps, and ask one practical question: If the battery dies, does the muff still protect hearing? The answer should be yes.
Scenario 2: Security Work, Shooting, or Any Role With Radio Traffic
Now change the conditions. The noise is still dangerous—gunfire, range noise, vehicles—but the user also has to hear commands, footsteps, and conversations. A standard passive earplug can isolate them too much. They pull it out when they need to speak, and then they’re exposed. A pair of Peltor TEP-100 tactical earbuds is a different animal. It’s an OSHA conversation. In construction, the trigger is generally 6 feet (29 CFR 1926.501); in general industry, unprotected edges trigger at 4 feet (29 CFR 1910.28).

This question follows me even outside work. Someone finds out I order hearing protection, and they ask, “Is it bad to wear earplugs every night?”
Short answer: not automatically, but there are caveats. It’s usually fine for most people for short periods if the earplugs are clean, inserted gently, replaced regularly, and removed if your ears hurt or feel blocked. Extended nightly use can be harder on skin and earwax than earplugs worn for workshifts. You need clean ears and clean earplugs.
If you’re using earplugs because a partner’s snoring keeps you up, don’t stop there. Earplugs mask the symptom. The snoring might be treatable, or it might be a sign of something bigger—a sleep study can give a clearer answer than a higher NRR.
How to Tell Which Scenario You’re Actually In
The next time someone sends you a vague request for “Peltor” or “hearing protection,” run these in this order:
- What’s the noise level and duration? If nobody has measured it, measuring beats guessing. Loud all day and loud every few minutes are not the same exposure.
- Does the user need to hear speech, alarms, or radio while protected? If yes, look at communication or level-dependent options. If no, passive high-NRR products may be the right call.
- What other hazards are in the same space? Low ceilings, traffic, moving equipment, fall edges, and falling objects all change the rest of the PPE. Ear protection doesn’t happen in isolation.
An informed requester is easier to buy for. I’d rather explain ten minutes of NRR basics upfront than send back another order that doesn’t fit. That’s not a sales pitch; it’s just the fastest way I know to get the right gear on the right worker.
